How JoSAA seat allocation works
JoSAA allocates IIT, NIT, IIIT and GFTI seats in multiple rounds based on your rank, category and the order of your choices. Your choice list is the single most important thing you control.
Freeze, float or slide?
Freeze accepts the seat and exits further rounds. Float keeps the seat but lets you upgrade to any higher choice. Slide keeps you at the same institute but lets you move to a higher-preference branch.
- Freeze if you're happy with both institute and branch
- Float if you'd move institutes for a better option
- Slide if the institute matters more than the branch
Common choice-filling mistakes
Students often list only dream options, or put a safe option above a better one. Order strictly by preference — the algorithm never moves you down your list.
